Ember runs Arch Linux and is my primary “workspace” server. It hosts most of my files, projects, and repositories, acting as the central site for Syncthing and an instance of Lanman. After being upgraded from a Celeron to Xeon it has also become the occassional build server and retro-VM host.

It is hosted at the server room at work, with 1 Gbps network access. It also has a Mellanox ConnectX-3 10 Gbps Ethernet card installed, connecting it directly to Wind over fiber.

Notes

Sometimes reports ECC-corrected memory errors.
Only two of the HDD bays are SATA 3.0 (6 Gbps); the other two are SATA 2.0 (3 Gbps).
Despite the manual saying that the (sole) PCI Express slot is Gen2 only, a few later CPUs such as the E3-1265L V2 in fact provide PCIe Gen3 lanes, making the ConnectX-3 a good fit.
The E3-1265L V2 is slightly too powerful for the stock 35W heatsink, so the firmware is set to "Increased Cooling" to compensate.

Gateway for Ember iLO access, powered from the server room's main UPS. Also the NTP server and fallback gateway for the server itself.

Previously a RB951G-2HnD (which is now ShoreGW), upgraded in 2025 to have an SFP port for a fiber connection to FrostGW.
